Questions? We’re Happy to Help

1. What’s the difference between custom cabinetry and pre-made cabinets?

Custom means your project is built specifically for your home, rather than trying to make standard-sized cabinets work in your space. We can design around unusual dimensions, make better use of storage and create something that feels like it was always meant to be there.

It also gives you much more choice when it comes to materials, finishes, hardware and the little details that make the finished project yours.

2. How long does a custom project take?

Every project is a little different, so we don’t like to promise a one-size-fits-all timeline. The size of the project, materials, finishing and complexity can all affect how long it takes.

Before we get started, we’ll give you a realistic idea of what to expect and keep you updated along the way. We know renovations can be disruptive, and we want the process to feel as straightforward as possible.

3. Can I choose my materials, colours and finishes?

Absolutely. That’s one of the best parts of going custom.

We’ll work with you to choose materials, colours, finishes, hardware and details that suit your home, your style and how you’ll actually use the space. If you already know exactly what you want, great. If you don’t, we’re happy to help you work through the options.

4. What can you build besides kitchens?

Quite a bit! While we love building kitchens, our work goes well beyond them.

We build mudrooms, built-ins, bathroom vanities, closets, home offices, entertainment units, storage solutions, custom furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces. If you have an awkward space or an idea you haven’t been able to find off the shelf, those are often some of our favourite projects.

5. Is custom cabinetry more expensive than pre-made cabinetry?

Sometimes, yes. We aren’t always going to be the cheapest option, and we’re okay being upfront about that. Our focus is on building something well, using quality materials and creating a finished product that fits your home and is made to last.

That said, the price difference isn’t always as significant as you might think. Pre-made cabinetry can add up quickly once you include doors, drawers, hardware, inserts and finishing pieces. You may also be working within standard cabinet sizes, which can mean fillers, wasted space or compromises in the layout.

We’re happy to talk openly about your budget and your options so you can decide what makes the most sense for your home.

6. Can you create custom cabinetry for any room in my home?

Yes. If there’s a space in your home that could work better, there’s a good chance we can come up with something for it.

Sometimes it’s a full kitchen or wall of built-ins. Other times it’s a small nook, an awkward corner, a better way to organize an entryway or a piece of furniture made specifically for one spot. Custom work gives us the freedom to design around the space you actually have.

7. How do I care for my custom cabinetry?

We’ll make sure you know how to care for your particular finish before we leave.

For everyday cleaning, cabinetry generally doesn’t need anything complicated. A soft, damp cloth and gentle cleaner are usually all that’s required. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals and excessive moisture. If you ever have a question about caring for something we’ve built, you can always reach out to us.

8. Can you match the existing style of my home?

Absolutely. Custom work shouldn’t feel like it was dropped into the middle of your home.

Whether your home is traditional, modern, coastal, contemporary or somewhere in between, we can design something that works with what’s already there. Bring us your inspiration photos, Pinterest boards, colours or even a picture of something in your home you love. It all helps us understand what feels like you.

9. What makes Gervais Custom Millwork different?

We’re a small, local shop, and we genuinely care about what leaves it.

Your kitchen, mudroom, built-in or vanity isn’t just another project on our list. It’s going into your home. We approach every piece with the same care and attention we would expect if it were going into our own.

Our work is handcrafted and finished in our shop using quality materials, with more than 20 years of experience behind it. We care about how it looks, how it functions and how well it holds up because we want you to enjoy it long after we’ve finished the installation.

10. What if I know I want to change my space but I’m not sure what I want?

That’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you contact us.

Sometimes people come to us with detailed drawings and a Pinterest board full of ideas. Others simply know that a room isn’t working for them anymore. We can talk through what you like, what you don’t like, how you use the space and what you’d like it to do better. From there, we can start putting the pieces together.
